ENGLISH HERITAGE'S LARGEST EVENT OF THE YEAR!

Celebrate everything that is fantastic about our green and pleasant land as you immerse yourself in the story of England at the biggest St George’s Day celebration in the country at Wrest Park, Bedfordshire.

Gasp as the lances shatter in the medieval joust; feel the earth tremble as the Roman Soldiers march; marvel as feathers fly in the falconry; and chortle at the cheeky jester. Have a tea party with Georgian ladies, bring out your inner James Bond as you learn ciphers and codes, mind the pikes wielded by the Civil War soldiers and watch fearsome fellows battle it out with club and shield in the Clash of Knights.

This is a Federation of the Wars of the Roses organised event

26th - 28th May, Skipton Castle

Picture
The Clifford Household and friends take up residence in Skipton Castle again for Spring Bank holiday weekend.

The spectacular show of 15thC firepower will take place on the main lawn where we have our practice field. Archers demonstrate their skill from the children in training to those with many years of practice and experience behind them. The afternoon sees the first outing for our recently improved trebuchet– see the balls fly through the air as the men practice for war.

Meanwhile there will be hand to hand combat along with the drilling of the lower ranks on the small lawn. Children from the castle will be called upon to show their potential in our Knight School. If you peek into the armoury you might see a man arming up into full harness (suit of armour). Who knows they might let you try on a piece or two.

If you hear the clang of a hammer above the clash of steel that will be our blacksmith – a vital part of the household he fixes mends and makes all manner of things. He isn’t the only smith we have – alongside him you may see our goldsmith and our whitesmith who make some of the finer things as well as a few useful ones.
The Chapel lawn will host the main encampment where the hustle and bustle of everyday life from cooking to washing to sewing continues throughout the day.

All this and more – come and join the fun!

16th - 17th June Tatton Medieval Fayre

The Medieval Fayre re-creates a summer solstice spectacle. With hundreds of re-enactors and over 40 authentic traders and artisans, the fayre is one of the most atmospheric events in the living history calendar. Good food, ale and mead will refresh the visitor and revive battle weary troops while music will stir the soul. Travelling traders will sell fine fabrics and wonderful artefacts. Tatton's historic Old Hall and grounds will echo to the flash of cannon and musket and twang of longbow as medieval warriors demonstrate their skills. Minstrels, mercenaries, men-at-arms, archers, gunners, falconers and a ragtag army of hangers-on add to the atmospheric backdrop. All is not quite what it seems though...despite all the fun of the fayre a jealous neighbour and his army are determined to wrest the Old Hall from its rightful owner! The ensuing Battle of Tatton Field finale each day promises to be exciting and noisy as rivalry comes into play. Whose side will you cheer for? The Old Hall is open for tours.

14th - 15th July Tewkesbury Medieval Festival

Tewkesbury Medieval Festival has been the high spot of Tewkesbury’s summer since 1984. It is now widely regarded as the largest free medieval gathering of its kind in Europe, and attracts re-enactors, traders and entertainers, and visitors from all over the world.
Its central attraction is a re-enactment of the Battle of Tewkesbury, on part of the site of the original 1471 battlefield. Many of the participants including wives and children live as a medieval army in authentic medieval encampments for the whole weekend.

24th - 27th August Muncaster Castle Medieval Weekend

The awe inspiring backdrop of Muncaster castle provides the stage for our last event of the season.

Once again there will be the clang of the blacksmith's hammer, the clash of swords and the smell of woodsmoke as we bring the sights, sounds and smells of the Cousins' War (War of the Roses) to Muncaster.

The spectacular show of 15thC firepower will take place on the main lawn where we have our practice field. Archers demonstrate their skill from the children in training to those with many years of practice and experience behind them.

See the awesome power of the recently improved trebuchet as the men loose balls high into the air honing their skills in preparation for war.

During the day there will also be hand to hand combat displays along with the drilling of the lower ranks.

Children from the castle will be called upon to show their potential in our Knight School.

Our full armoury, cordwainer (shoemaker) and medieval camp kitchen will be on display with knowledgable people working on hand ready to answer any questions you have and maybe help you try on a piece of armour or two.

Finally, if you are lucky, you may catch the gruesome sight of the household's barber surgeon extracting the odd arrow or telling tales of amputations....
